Sustainability

At Palladian Press we work hard to reduce our carbon footprint and make our business as environmentally friendly as possible. We have studied the impact our work has on the environment, and we not only comply with current regulations, but we exceed them wherever we can.

One of the most important ways we reduce our impact on climate change is by careful sourcing of raw materials. We need to use high-quality paper and board, and we are also determined not to contribute to the wholesale destruction of forests and the soil erosion that goes hand in hand with their demise.

That’s why we are proud holders of Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain of Custody accreditation (certificate number SGS-COC-005212). This accreditation assures you that the paper and cardboard we used can be traced through the supply chain to an FSC-certified forest of origin. This is important because FSC-certified forests are managed in ways that safeguard long-term timber supplies, whilst protecting the environment and the lives of forest-dependent peoples.

There are three principal kinds of FSC-certified paper. Firstly, there is FSC 100%, which is made from forests that are certified as meeting the organisation's high environmental and social standards. Secondly, there is FSC Recycled, which uses only post-consumer reclaimed material. Finally, there is FSC Mixed Sources (see logo, left), which contains wood from FSC-certified well-managed forests, controlled sources and/or recycled material. You can find a detailed explanation of the labelling scheme here.

Whilst paper is the mainstay of our business, we strive to make sure all our procedures have the smallest possible impact on the environment. We are scrupulous about recycling our own waste, and ensure that we use the minimum amount of energy for our operations.

Our environmental practices are continually developing for the better. Over the next two years, we plan to install a cold-water loop on our printing presses, increasing the efficiency of our cooling system by up to 30%. We’re going to be installing motion sensors over the next year, making sure that electrical equipment is switched off when it’s not being used. And we are presently auditing the ways in which our staff travel to work, allowing us to recommend more sustainable and less environmentally-damaging ways of making those same journeys (such as car sharing or cycling).
